The (Senior) Associate Scientist, Metabolic Engineering and Systems Biology is a key role within Intrexon’s Industrial Products Division (IPD), mainly responsible for fermentation optimization and scale-up across an array of micro-organisms, in particular yeast and bacteria. The candidate must have a proven track record of running microbial fermentations processes. The candidate is also expected to utilize molecular genetics technologies for strain engineering.

POSITION SUMMARY
The (Senior) Associate Scientist is a key role within Intrexon’s Industrial Products Division (IPD), mainly responsible for fermentation optimization and scale-up across an array of micro-organisms, in particular yeast and bacteria.  The candidate must have a proven track record of running microbial fermentations processes. The candidate is also expected to utilize molecular genetics technologies for strain engineering.
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Work as part of a multi-functional team to develop scalable and economical biotechnological solutions for industrial markets.  Typical duties include, but are not limited to:
 
  • Enable current production processes by strain and process improvement
  • Medium-throughput to fermentation (0.5 to >10L)
  • Fermentation optimization and scale-up
  • Fermentation technology transfer
  • Strong background in general molecular biology techniques a must (including DNA purification, PCR, cloning and expression)
  • Experience in microbial genetics
  • Participate actively in project meetings
 
RESPONSIBILITY
Reports to:  Director, Metabolic Engineering and Systems Biology
Supervisory: None
 
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • B.S. (M.S. preferred) in Chemical Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, Biology, or equivalent
  • 5+ years experience (BS), or 2+ years experience (MS) with a proven track record of accomplishments in microbial fermentation processes from shake flask to >10 L fermentation scale, preferably in bio-industrial, or life sciences companies.
