POSITION SUMMARY
 
The Scientist II position will be responsible for leading the development of new cell lines and new assays using cutting edge technologies in cell manipulation and genetic engineering and automation.  Appropriate candidates will have extensive practical experience with cell culture, in particular bio-production cell lines, cell-based assays and preferably with protein production and purification.  The successful candidate will be expected to plan and lead scientific and technical tasks on aggressive timelines and to work as part of a team on varied tasks with changing priorities.  Position requires excellent communication and presentation skills, a documented ability to troubleshoot technical issues, an ability to plan and carry out experiments independently, and to work with complex instrumentation and software.
 
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead a high-performance technical and support team under the direction of the Vice President, CLTD.
  • Responsible for the execution of high-throughput cell line development projects, including bioproduction cell lines.
  • Lead the implementation of clone expansion automation.
  • Seek and qualify new scientific and automated technologies.
  • Lead the development of novel image-based cellular assays.
  • Actively collaborate with other CEU teams and external research and commercial partners as applicable to support technology transfer and collaborative projects.
  • Maintain expert knowledge of current cell biology literature.
  • Propose continual process improvements for efficiency and quality.
  • Prepare technical reports and make clear and succinct scientific presentations that can be shared and transferred to and from cross-functional teams.

MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provide leadership, drive change, and execute on the company’s mission and core values.
  • Cross-train and coach staff to maintain an efficient, lean, and knowledgeable team.
  • Create a weekly and daily schedule for the team; coordinate individual and team work assignments that foster innovation and produce results.
  • Coordinate and lead regular project meetings.
  • Create SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound) metrics for the team to follow and monitor their advancement on projects under rapidly shifting priorities and timelines.
  • Ensure relevant safety protocols and instructions are readily available and strictly adhered to.
  
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Ph.D. in Cell Biology, Immunology, Molecular Biology, or related field.
  • Minimum 4 years related post-doctoral experience; industry experience preferred.
  • Extensive expertise in mammalian cell culture techniques.
  • Expert proficiency with microscopy, fluorescent assays, and related instrumentation.
  • Experience with automation and cell culture process development.  
  • Experience with bioproduction cell lines; CHO highly preferred.
  • Proven track record in process improvements and technical troubleshooting.
  • Must be expert in molecular biology techniques such as qRT-PCR, cloning, plasmid prep, etc.
  • Supervisory/management experience a plus.
  • Experience using high-content, image-based software analysis systems is a plus.
